The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 2-1/2" x 60" and features 36 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. To protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, the belt includes a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin for enhanced durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia abrasives frequently fracture to continuously produce sharp points, delivering a faster cut compared to aluminum oxide. This synthetic mineral was developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. Abrasive belts are available in various widths and lengths to fit multiple belt sanding tools, with wider belts used on wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough cut edges or adding grain patterns, medium-width belts employed on backstands or feed-thru style flat finishers for weld removal and finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts utilized on backstands or file tools to access right-angle corners for finishing. Typical applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
