The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 2-1/2" x 60" and features 50 grit alumina zirconium abrasive designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. To protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, the belt includes a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia fractures frequently to produce sharp points, delivering a faster cut-rate than aluminum oxide, making it suitable for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The belts are available in various widths and lengths to fit a range of industrial belt sanding tools and metalworking applications. Wider belts are used with wide belt sanders for flat finishing, smoothing rough cut edges, or adding grain patterns to stainless steel sheets. Medium-width belts are generally used on backstands for weld removal or feed-thru flat finishers on sheets or coils, while narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools to access right-angle corners. Applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, gate removal, intermediate and flat finishing, high-pressure grinding, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
