The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 3" x 78-1/2" and features 36 grit alumina zirconium abrasive designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive materials such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing to ensure durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral, fractures frequently to produce sharp points, enabling faster cut rates than aluminum oxide, making it suitable for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. Abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths to fit multiple belt sanding tools, with wider belts suitable for wide belt sanders to smooth rough cut edges or add grain patterns, medium-width belts commonly used on backstands or feed-thru finishers, and narrow belts used on backstands or file tools for finishing in tight corners. Typical applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
