The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 2" x 36" with 40 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It features a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures on heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, with the abrasive firmly bonded to the backing using resin to ensure durability under high heat and pressure. The alumina zirconium abrasive fractures frequently to maintain sharp points, enabling a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. This synthetic mineral is developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The belts are available in multiple widths and lengths, fitting a variety of belt sanding tools for numerous metalworking applications. Wide belts are used with wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough metal sheet edges or adding grain patterns to stainless steel sheets. Medium-width belts are typically used on backstands for weld removal or on feed-thru flat finishers for finishing sheets or coils. Narrow belts are suitable for backstands for grinding and finishing, or file tools to access right-angle corners. Typical applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
