The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 1" x 42" and features 80 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures when working with heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the cloth backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia fractures frequently to continually produce sharp points and delivers a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. This synthetic mineral was developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The abrasive belts are available in multiple widths and lengths to fit various belt sanding tools used in metalworking applications. Wide belts are suitable for wide belt sanders to smooth rough cut edges or add a grain pattern to stainless steel sheets, medium-width belts are generally used on backstands for weld removal or feed-thru flat finishers for sheet or coil finishing, and narrow belts can be used on backstands for grinding and finishing or on file tools for accessing right-angle corners. Typical applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
