The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 1-1/2" x 60" with 80 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It features a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures to protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, fractures frequently to continually produce sharp points and deliver a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. The abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths to fit different belt sanding tools and industrial belt sanders, with wider belts suited for wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough metal sheets, medium-width belts used on backstands or feed-thru style flat finishers for weld removal and finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts for grinding and finishing on backstands or file tools to access right-angle corners. Typical applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
