The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 2" x 48" and features 60 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It includes a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures to protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the cloth backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia frequently fractures to continually produce sharp points, delivering a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide, and is a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The belts come in various widths and lengths to fit numerous industrial belt sanders; wider belts are used with wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough metal edges or adding a grain pattern to stainless steel sheets, medium-width belts for weld removal or finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts for grinding, finishing, or accessing right-angle corners with file tools. Key applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
