The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 25" x 48" and features a 120 grit alumina zirconium abrasive grain that offers increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. It is backed with a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing designed to withstand high-pressure applications and edge work, ensuring durability for both wet and dry operations. The belt is recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys in processes such as dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. A grinding aid on the belt helps reduce running temperatures to protect heat-sensitive alloys including stainless steel, nickel, and cobalt alloys. The alumina zirconia abrasive fractures frequently to continually produce sharp points, resulting in a faster cut rate suitable for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. The belt is compatible with various industrial belt sanders and is available in multiple widths and lengths; wider belts are suited for wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough-cut metal edges, medium-width belts are typically used on backstands or feed-thru flat finishers for weld removal and finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools to access right-angle corners. Typical applications include descaling, flat finishing, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, plate grinding, sheet grinding, and slab grinding.
