The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 3/4" x 18" and features alumina zirconia abrasive grain, which offers increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. It is backed with a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing designed to withstand high-pressure applications and edge work, providing durability for both wet and dry operations. This cloth belt is recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. To protect heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel, and cobalt alloys, the belt incorporates a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia is a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, as it frequently fractures to continuously produce sharp points, resulting in a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. The belt is available in various widths and lengths to fit a wide range of industrial belt sanders. Wider belts suit wide belt sanders for flat finishing or adding grain patterns to metal sheets, medium-width belts are used on backstands or feed-thru flat finishers for weld removal and finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts are used on backstands or file tools for grinding and finishing in tight corners. Typical applications include blending, coating removal, deburring, and high-pressure grinding, serving industries such as builders hardware, medical instruments, metal fabrication, metal implants, plating and polishing, plumbing fixtures, and turbine engines.
