The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 3/4" x 18" and features an alumina zirconium abrasive grain, which provides increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. This belt is backed with a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing that is designed to withstand high-pressure applications and edge work, ensuring long life for both wet and dry operations. It is recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for tasks such as dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt includes a grinding aid to protect heat-sensitive alloys like stainless steel, nickel, and cobalt alloys by reducing running temperatures. The resin-bonded abrasive maintains durability under high heat and pressure, while the alumina zirconia structure fractures frequently to create sharp points that enhance cutting speed. Suitable for heavy stock removal, this synthetic mineral is applicable across a wide range of metalworking tasks and is compatible with various belt sanding tools. Wider belts are ideal for flat finishing and smoothing rough edges, medium-width belts are used for weld removal and finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts fit backstands for grinding or finishing in tight corners.
