The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 37" x 60" and features 180 grit alumina zirconium abrasive grain, which provides increased cutting efficiency compared to aluminum oxide belts. It is backed with a heavy, water-resistant polyester backing that is durable and suitable for high-pressure applications and edge work, supporting both wet and dry operations. This belt is recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for tasks such as dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. To protect heat-sensitive alloys like stainless steel, nickel, and cobalt alloys, the belt includes a grinding aid that reduces running temperatures. The abrasive grain is resin-bonded to the backing to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconium is a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, as it fractures frequently to continually present sharp points, delivering a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. The belts come in various widths and lengths to fit a wide range of industrial belt sanders: wider belts suit wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough edges of metal sheets or adding grain patterns; medium-width belts fit backstands for weld removal or feed-thru finishers; narrow belts are used on backstands for grinding and finishing or on file tools to reach right-angle corners. Applications include descaling, flat finishing, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, plate grinding, sheet grinding, and slab grinding, serving industries such as builders hardware, medical instruments, and metal fabrication.
