The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 4" x 168" and features 36 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the cloth backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia fractures frequently to produce sharp points, enabling a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide and is developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding. The cloth belts are available in various widths and lengths to fit multiple industrial belt sanders: wider belts are used with wide belt sanders for flat finishing and grain pattern application on metal sheets; medium-width belts are suited for backstands and feed-thru style flat finishers; narrow belts can be used on backstands or file tools to access right-angle corners. Typical applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, flat finishing, gate removal, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
