The 3M™ Cloth Belt 577F measures 4" x 168" with an 80 grit Alumina Zirconium abrasive, recommended for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is firmly bonded to the backing with resin to maintain durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina Zirconium is a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, fracturing frequently to continually produce sharp points for a faster cut-rate than aluminum oxide. The abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths to fit different belt sanding tools, with wider belts used on wide belt sanders for flat finishing and smoothing rough-cut edges of metal sheets, medium-width belts typically used on a backstand for weld removal or feed-thru flat finishing, and narrow belts suitable for grinding, finishing, and accessing right-angle corners on file tools. Applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding. It is used in industries such as builders hardware, medical instruments, metal fabrication, metal implants, plating and polishing, plumbing fixtures, and turbine engines.
