The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 6" x 60" and features 60 grit alumina zirconium abrasive, designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. It incorporates a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures when working with heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys, while the abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing to ensure durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral known for its heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding capabilities, fractures frequently to continually produce sharp points, delivering a faster cut rate than aluminum oxide. The belts are available in various widths and lengths to fit a range of industrial belt sanders, with wider belts used for flat finishing and smoothing rough metal edges, medium-width belts for weld removal and finishing sheets or coils, and narrow belts for grinding and finishing in tight spaces or corners. Typical applications include centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
