The 3M™ cloth belt 577F measures 6" x 90" and features 40 grit alumina zirconium abrasive designed for use on aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and other exotic metal alloys for dimensioning parts, deburring, blending, and finishing castings and forgings. The belt includes a grinding aid to reduce running temperatures, protecting heat-sensitive alloys such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, and cobalt alloys. The abrasive is resin-bonded to the backing for durability under high heat and pressure. Alumina zirconia, a synthetic mineral developed for heavy stock removal and high-pressure grinding, continuously fractures to produce sharp points for a faster cut rate compared to aluminum oxide. The belts come in various widths and lengths to accommodate different belt sanding tools for metalworking applications, with wider belts used for wide belt sanders in flat finishing and broad surface work, medium widths typically on backstands or feed-thru style finishers, and narrow belts suited for right-angle corner finishing or backstand use. The belt is suitable for applications including centerless and cylindrical grinding, descaling, finishing, flat finishing, gate removal, high-pressure grinding, intermediate finishing, mill scale removal, parting line removal, plate grinding, shaping, and sheet grinding.
