The 3M™ Cloth Belt 340D measures 3 inches by 24 inches and features P120 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains that are fast-cutting and resin-bonded to a durable cotton cloth backing for continuous cut and long life. It has an open coat and load-resistant coating, making it especially suitable for sanding soft woods. The washable backing supports high production environments where periodic washing is necessary to remove soft wood resin or pitch buildup. The aluminum oxide mineral is widely used in industrial applications due to its cut-rate, durability, and long life, suitable for woodworking and metalworking on ferrous alloys. The abrasive particles adhered with resin to the cloth backing create a strong bond able to withstand high heat and pressure. Available in various widths and lengths, these abrasive belts fit multiple belt sanding tools; wider belts are for wide belt sanders to dimension and finish wood panels or smooth metal sheet edges, medium-width belts fit edge sanders for flat, narrow surfaces like panel edges, and narrow belts work with portable belt sanders for sanding or blending wood pieces such as cabinet doors. Belts feature different splices for joining ends: film media splices use a joining film to minimize chatter marks and ensure smooth running and consistent finishing, while sine wave splices involve interlocking fingers that allow smooth travel over contact wheels, reduce hinging, and strengthen the joint, typically used for coarser grades.
