The 3M™ Cloth Belt 340D measures 3" x 21" and features 60 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains that are resin-bonded to a durable cotton cloth backing, providing fast cutting performance and long life. It uses an open coat and load-resistant coating, making it particularly suitable for sanding soft woods, and its washable backing allows for cleaning in high production environments to remove resin or pitch buildup. The aluminum oxide mineral is widely used in industrial applications due to its cut-rate, durability, and adaptability to materials including ferrous alloys, making it the most common industrial abrasive. The abrasive particles are adhered with resin to withstand high heat and pressure. This belt is compatible with various belt sanding tools and applications in both woodworking and metalworking, with a broad selection of widths and lengths available to fit most industrial sanders. Wider belts are used for dimensioning or finishing wood panels, smoothing metal sheets, or adding grain patterns to stainless steel, while medium-width belts are suited for sanding flat, narrow surfaces such as panel edges, and narrow belts work with portable sanders for blending wood pieces like cabinet doors. The belts include different splice types; a film media splice provides a secure bond with minimal chatter marks for smooth running and consistent finishing, while a sine wave splice with interlocking fingers reduces hinging and strengthens the joint, typically used for coarser grades and wider belts.
