The 3M™ Cloth Belt 340D measures 4" x 24" and features 60 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains that are resin-bonded to a durable cotton cloth backing, providing fast cutting, continuous cut, and long life. The belt has an open coat and load-resistant coating, making it ideal for sanding soft woods, and its washable backing is suitable for high production environments requiring periodic washing to remove resin or pitch buildup. The aluminum oxide mineral is widely used in industrial applications due to its cut-rate, durability, and longevity, effective on various materials including ferrous alloys in both woodworking and metalworking. The abrasive particles are strongly adhered with resin, creating a bond that withstands high heat and pressure. These abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths suitable for different belt sanding tools and applications: wide belts for wide belt sanders to dimension or finish wood panels and smooth rough metal edges, medium-width belts for edge sanders to work on flat, narrow surfaces such as panel edges, and narrow belts for portable belt sanders to sand or blend wood pieces like cabinet doors. The belts incorporate different splice types: a film media splice uses a joining film to minimize chatter marks, provide smooth running belts, and consistent finishing, while a sine wave splice made of interlocking fingers enables smooth travel over contact wheels, reduces hinging, and enhances joint strength; sine wave splices are generally used for coarser grades.
