The 3M™ Cloth Belt 341D measures 3" x 24" and features 36 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains that are resin-bonded to a durable X-weight cotton cloth backing, providing continuous cut and long-life performance for more aggressive dry sanding applications. It is designed for finishing metal with a closed coat construction that delivers a consistent, fine finish and is suitable for producing a grain pattern; the belt should not be used wet. Aluminum oxide is favored in industrial settings for its cutting rate, durability, and long life and is effective on a variety of materials including ferrous alloys in both woodworking and metalworking. The abrasive grains are securely bonded to the cloth backing with resin to withstand high heat and pressure. These abrasive belts come in multiple widths and lengths to fit a variety of belt sanding tools, such as wide belts for wide belt sanders used in dimensioning or finishing wood panels, smoothing rough metal edges, or adding grain patterns to stainless steel. Medium-width belts are designed for edge sanders that handle flat, narrow surfaces like panel edges, while narrow belts fit portable belt sanders for sanding or blending wood pieces such as cabinet doors. Belt splices vary by type: film media splices use a joining film to minimize chatter marks and ensure smooth operation for consistent finishes, whereas sine wave splices are constructed with interlocking fingers to travel smoothly over contact wheels, reduce hinging, and strengthen the joint area, typically used for coarser grits.
