The 3M™ cloth belt 341D measures 2-1/2" x 48" and features 40 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains resin-bonded to a durable X-weight cotton cloth backing, delivering fast-cutting performance and long life suitable for aggressive dry sanding applications. Designed for finishing metal, the closed coat construction provides a consistent, fine finish ideal for producing a grain pattern, and the belt is not intended for wet use. The aluminum oxide mineral abrasive is favored in industrial settings for its cut-rate, durability, and use on a wide range of materials, including ferrous alloys in woodworking and metalworking. The abrasive particles are bonded to the cloth backing with resin, allowing the belt to withstand high heat and pressure. The belts come in various widths and lengths to accommodate different belt sanding tools and applications: wide belts are used with wide belt sanders to dimension or finish wood panels, smooth metal sheet edges, or add grain patterns to stainless steel; medium-width belts fit edge sanders for flat, narrow surfaces such as panel edges; and narrow belts are for portable belt sanders, ideal for sanding or blending wood pieces like cabinet doors. The belts include different splice types: a film media splice with a joining film that reduces chatter marks and ensures smooth running and consistent finishing, and a sine wave splice with interlocking fingers designed to travel smoothly over contact wheels, reduce hinging, and enhance joint strength, commonly used for coarser applications.
