The 3M™ cloth belt 341D measures 2-1/2" x 48" and features 80 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains resin-bonded to a durable X-weight cotton cloth backing, designed for continuous cut and long-life performance necessary for aggressive dry sanding applications. It is intended for finishing on metal with a closed coat construction that offers a consistent fine finish and is suitable for producing a grain pattern, but it should not be run wet. The aluminum oxide mineral is known for its cut-rate, durability, and long life, making it suitable for a variety of materials in woodworking and metalworking, including ferrous alloys. The abrasive particles are bonded to the cloth backing with resin that withstands high heat and pressure. These abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths to fit many belt sanding tools used on wood and metal; wider belts are for wide belt sanders to dimension or finish wood panels and smooth metal sheet edges, medium-width belts fit edge sanders for flat, narrow surfaces such as panel edges, and narrow belts are for portable belt sanders used on wood pieces like cabinet doors. Belt splices vary; a film media splice uses a joining film for a secure bond minimizing chatter marks and ensuring smooth operation and consistent finishing, while a sine wave splice, constructed of interlocking fingers, enables smooth travel over contact wheels, reduces hinging, and adds strength to the joint area, typically used for coarser grits.
