The 3M™ Cloth Belt 341D measures 1 inch by 42 inches and features P320 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains bonded with resin to a durable X-weight cotton cloth backing, designed for fast-cutting and long-life performance in aggressive dry sanding applications. It is intended for finishing metal surfaces, offering a consistent fine finish with its closed coat construction and is suitable for producing grain patterns; this belt should not be used wet. Aluminum oxide mineral is widely used in industrial settings for its cut-rate, durability, and long life and is effective on various materials, including ferrous alloys in woodworking and metalworking. The abrasive grains are strongly bonded to the cloth backing to withstand high heat and pressure during use. These abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths for compatibility with different belt sanding tools and applications; wider belts are used with wide belt sanders for dimensioning or finishing wood panels and smoothing rough metal edges, medium-width belts are used with edge sanders for flat, narrow surfaces such as panel edges, and narrow belts are suitable for portable belt sanders for sanding or blending wood pieces like cabinet doors. Belt ends are joined with different splice types, including film media splices that create a secure bond with a joining film minimizing chatter marks and ensuring smooth operation, and sine wave splices constructed with interlocking fingers to allow smooth travel over contact wheels, reduce hinging, and strengthen the joint area, especially for coarser grades.
