The 3M™ cloth belt 341D measures 10" x 70-1/2" and features 36 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains resin-bonded to a durable X-weight cotton cloth backing, designed for continuous cut and long-life performance in aggressive dry sanding applications. It is suitable for finishing on metal with its closed coat construction, which offers a consistent, fine finish and is ideal for producing a grain pattern; however, the belt should not be used wet. Aluminum oxide mineral is widely used in industrial applications due to its cut rate, durability, and long life, and it can be applied to various materials in woodworking and metalworking, including ferrous alloys. The resin bonding of abrasive particles to the cloth backing ensures a strong bond that withstands high heat and pressure. Abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths to accommodate many sanding tools and applications on wood and metal; wider belts fit wide belt sanders for dimensioning or finishing wood panels, smoothing rough edges of metal sheets, or adding grain patterns to stainless steel, medium-width belts are used on edge sanders for flat, narrow surfaces like panel edges, and narrow belts are suited for portable belt sanders for blending wood pieces such as cabinet doors. The belts feature several splice types including film media splice, which uses a joining film for a secure bond that minimizes chatter marks and ensures smooth running and consistent finishing, and sine wave splice, constructed of interlocking fingers for smooth travel over contact wheels, reducing hinging and adding strength to the joint area, usually applied in coarse sanding operations.
