The 3M™ cloth belt 341D measures 4" x 54" with 50 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains resin-bonded to a durable X-weight cotton cloth backing, designed for aggressive dry sanding applications. It features a closed coat construction that offers a consistent, fine finish suitable for finishing metal and producing a grain pattern, but it should not be run wet. The aluminum oxide mineral is highly durable, fast-cutting, and adheres strongly to the backing to withstand high heat and pressure, making it ideal for use on various materials including ferrous alloys in woodworking and metalworking. These abrasive belts come in different widths and lengths to fit various belt sanding tools; wider belts are used with wide belt sanders for dimensioning or finishing wood panels and smoothing rough-cut metal edges, medium-width belts are suitable for edge sanders to sand flat, narrow surfaces such as panel edges, and narrow belts fit portable belt sanders for blending or sanding wood pieces like cabinet doors. The belts incorporate different types of splices, including film media splices that ensure a secure bond with minimal chatter marks for smooth running and consistent finishing, and sine wave splices made of interlocking fingers that travel smoothly over contact wheels, reduce hinging, and strengthen the joint area; sine wave splices are typically used for coarser grits.
