The 3M™ Cloth Belt 341D measures 8" x 107" and features 36 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains resin-bonded to a durable X-weight cotton cloth backing, designed for fast cutting and long-life performance in aggressive dry sanding applications. The belt uses a closed coat construction suitable for finishing on metal to produce a consistent, fine grain pattern, but it should not be run wet. The aluminum oxide mineral provides a balance of cut rate, durability, and long life for use on various materials including ferrous alloys, making it one of the most commonly used industrial abrasives. The abrasive particles are bonded with resin to withstand high heat and pressure. These belts come in multiple widths and lengths to fit a range of belt sanding tools, with wider belts for wide belt sanders used for dimensioning and finishing wood panels or smoothing metal sheets, medium-width belts for edge sanders on flat or narrow surfaces, and narrow belts for portable belt sanders to blend wood pieces. Belt splices vary to join the ends securely; a film media splice uses a joining film to minimize chatter marks and smooth running, while a sine wave splice consists of interlocking fingers that reduce hinging, improve smooth travel over contact wheels, and strengthen the joint, typically used for coarser grits.
