The 3M™ cloth belt 340D measures 6" x 48" and features 60 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains that are resin-bonded to a durable cotton cloth backing, providing fast cutting, continuous cut, and long life. It utilizes an open coat and load-resistant coating that make the belt especially suitable for sanding soft woods. The washable backing supports high production environments by allowing washing to remove soft wood resin or pitch buildup. The aluminum oxide mineral is popular for its cut rate, durability, and versatility across woodworking and metalworking applications, including use on ferrous alloys. The abrasive particles are bonded with resin, creating a strong bond that resists high heat and pressure. Various widths and lengths of abrasive belts accommodate different sanding tools and applications: wide belts for dimensioning or finishing wood panels and smoothing metal edges, medium-width belts for edge sanders on flat narrow surfaces, and narrow belts for portable sanders on wood pieces like cabinet doors. The belt includes different splice types; a film media splice ensures a secure bond with a joining film to minimize chatter marks and deliver consistent finishing, while a sine wave splice of interlocking fingers allows smooth travel over contact wheels, reduces hinging, and strengthens the joint, typically used for coarser grades and wide belts.
