The 3M™ Cloth Belt 341D measures 2 inches by 18-15/16 inches and features 60 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains resin-bonded to a durable x-weight cotton cloth backing, designed for fast cutting and long-life performance in more aggressive dry sanding applications. It is intended for finishing on metal, with a closed coat construction that delivers a consistent, fine finish and is suitable for producing a grain pattern; the belt is not to be run wet. Aluminum oxide is favored for its cut-rate, durability, and suitability for a wide variety of materials including ferrous alloys, adhering to the cloth backing with resin to withstand high heat and pressure. These abrasive belts are available in various widths and lengths to accommodate different belt sanding tools and applications on wood and metal—wider belts are used on wide belt sanders for dimensioning or finishing wood panels, smoothing metal sheet edges, or adding grain patterns to stainless steel, medium-width belts fit edge sanders to sand narrow surfaces such as panel edges, and narrow belts are used with portable belt sanders for sanding or blending wood pieces like cabinet doors. The belts have different splices to join ends: film media splices use a joining film to minimize chatter marks and ensure smooth running and consistent finishing, while sine wave splices consist of interlocking fingers that smoothly travel over contact wheels, reduce hinging, and provide added joint strength.
