The 3M™ Cloth Belt 341D measures 4" x 54" and features 80 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains resin-bonded to a durable X-weight cotton cloth backing, designed for fast cutting and long-life performance in more aggressive dry sanding applications. It is intended for metal finishing, where the closed coat construction provides a consistent, fine finish suitable for producing a grain pattern, but it should not be run wet. Aluminum oxide mineral is widely used industrially for its cutting rate, durability, and long life, applicable to a variety of materials including ferrous alloys in both woodworking and metalworking. The abrasive particles are bonded to the cloth backing with resin, creating a strong bond that withstands high heat and pressure. The belts come in various widths and lengths to fit different belt sanding tools and applications; wider belts are suitable for wide belt sanders to dimension or finish wood panels and smooth or add a grain pattern to metal sheets, while medium-width belts fit edge sanders for sanding flat, narrow surfaces like panel edges. Narrow belts are designed for portable belt sanders and are used for sanding or blending smaller wood pieces such as cabinet doors. Belt ends can be joined with film media splices that secure the bond with a joining film to minimize chatter marks and produce smooth, consistent finishes, or with sine wave splices featuring interlocking fingers to allow smooth travel over contact wheels, reduce hinging, and add strength, particularly used for coarser grits.
