The 3M™ cloth belt 341D measures 3" x 21" and features 40 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains resin-bonded to a durable X-weight cotton cloth backing, designed for fast-cutting performance and long life in aggressive dry sanding applications. It offers a closed coat construction that provides a consistent fine finish and is suitable for producing a grain pattern on metal surfaces, but it should not be used wet. The aluminum oxide abrasive is widely used in both woodworking and metalworking, including on ferrous alloys, due to its cut-rate, durability, and long life. The abrasive particles are bonded to the cloth backing with resin, creating a strong bond that resists high heat and pressure. The belts are available in various widths and lengths to fit different industrial belt sanders, including wide belts for wide belt sanders to dimension or finish wood panels, smooth metal sheet edges, or add grain patterns to stainless steel; medium-width belts for edge sanders on flat narrow surfaces like panel edges; and narrow belts for portable sanders used on smaller wood pieces such as cabinet doors. Belt joins include film media splices, which use a joining film to minimize chatter marks and ensure smooth running and consistent finishing, and sine wave splices made from interlocking fingers to travel smoothly over contact wheels, reduce hinging, and add joint strength, typically used for coarser grades.
