The 3M™ cloth belt 341D measures 3" x 21" and features 80 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains resin-bonded to a durable X-weight cotton cloth backing, designed for fast cutting and long-life performance in aggressive dry sanding applications on metal. Its closed coat construction delivers a consistent fine finish and is suitable for producing a grain pattern but is not intended for wet use. The aluminum oxide mineral is known for its cut rate, durability, and versatility across materials including ferrous alloys, commonly used in both woodworking and metalworking industries. The abrasive grains adhere strongly to the cloth backing through a resin bond that resists high heat and pressure. These abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths to accommodate different sanding tools and applications: wide belts are used with wide belt sanders for dimensioning or finishing wood panels and smoothing metal edges, medium-width belts fit edge sanders for flat, narrow surfaces like panel edges, and narrow belts are suited for portable belt sanders for sanding or blending smaller wood parts such as cabinet doors. Belt splices include film media splices that use a joining film to minimize chatter marks and ensure smooth running for consistent finishing, and sine wave splices made of interlocking fingers that provide smooth travel over contact wheels, reduce hinging, and strengthen the joint, typically used for coarser grits.
