The 3M™ cloth belt 340D measures 4 inches by 132 inches and features 80 grit aluminum oxide abrasive grains. These fast-cutting grains are resin-bonded to a durable cotton cloth backing, providing continuous cutting performance and long life. The belt employs an open coat and load-resistant coating, making it particularly suited for sanding soft woods. The washable backing is ideal for high production environments where periodic washing is needed to remove soft wood resin or pitch buildup. The aluminum oxide mineral is favored for its cut rate, durability, and longevity and can be used on various materials in woodworking and metalworking, including ferrous alloys. The abrasive particles are adhered to the cloth backing with resin, creating a strong bond that withstands high heat and pressure. Abrasive belts come in various widths and lengths to fit multiple belt sanding tools for diverse applications on wood and metal. Wider belts are intended for wide belt sanders used to dimension or finish wood panels, smooth rough-cut metal sheet edges, or add grain patterns to stainless steel sheets. Medium-width belts fit edge sanders for sanding flat, narrow surfaces such as panel edges, while narrow belts are used with portable belt sanders for sanding or blending wood pieces like cabinet doors. Belt ends are joined with different splice types, including film media splices for secure bonding, minimal chatter marks, smooth running, and consistent finishing, and sine wave splices constructed of interlocking fingers that travel smoothly over contact wheels, reduce hinging, and strengthen the joint area.
