The 3M™ Scotch-Brite™ surface conditioning belt measures 3" x 132" and features VFN grit aluminum oxide abrasive mineral, designed to remove coarse grindlines, mill marks, and small burrs left by cutting tools or conventional abrasives. These abrasive belts are available in various widths and lengths to fit different belt sanding tools, suitable for applications on both wood and metal. Wide belts are used with wide belt sanders for large wood panels, medium-width belts with edge or portable belt sanders for sanding or blending wood pieces like cabinet doors, and narrow belts with file tools in metalworking to access small areas or inside corners. The aluminum oxide mineral is a hard, blocky abrasive that offers a high cut rate and long life, while an alternative mineral, silicon carbide, is a synthetic sharp mineral for low-pressure applications, producing a finer finish but with faster breakdown. Belt sanders equipped with these belts provide rapid grinding, sanding, and finishing on various surfaces without clogging, thanks to the small grooves in the abrasive belt that open as they move around the drive wheel. Typical applications include blending, blending corners, cleaning, contour finishing, deburring, fine finishing, flat finishing, setting the grain, stainless steel finishing, and achieving a straight line brushed finish, primarily used in metalworking industries.
