The 3M utility cloth roll measures 1 inch wide by 50 yards long and features an aluminum oxide abrasive with P400 grit. The desired strip length can be torn from the roll for specific applications; most grades use a light J-weight cloth backing that offers flexibility to conform to circular edges, angles, or other contours. Rolls with grades P50 or P60 have a slightly stiffer X-weight backing suitable for coarser sanding. The cloth remains durable without tearing or shelling even when bent or rolled, while strips can be torn by hand for smaller pieces without compromising the sanding surface. Aluminum oxide abrasive is valued for its fast cut rate, long life, and self-fracturing property that maintains fresh cutting edges, making it suitable for ferrous alloys, non-ferrous metals, wood, and plastic. Typical applications include blending, cleaning, contour finishing, deburring, and rust removal, serving industries such as marine, metalworking, and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO).
