The 3M utility cloth roll measures 1 inch wide by 50 yards long and features aluminum oxide abrasive with a P280 grit. The strip length can be torn from the roll for specific applications. Most grades have a light, J-weight cloth backing that provides flexibility needed to conform to circular edges, angles, or other contours, while rolls in grades P50 or P60 have a slightly stiffer X-weight backing suitable for more coarse sanding applications. The cloth remains durable even when bent or rolled, without tearing or shelling, yet strips can be torn by hand when smaller pieces are needed without compromising the sanding surface. Aluminum oxide is known for its fast cut-rate and long life, as this abrasive mineral self-fractures to expose fresh cutting edges, making it tougher and more durable than traditional natural abrasives. It is suitable for use on a wide variety of materials including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, wood, and plastic, and is commonly used for blending, cleaning, contour finishing, deburring, and rust removal in metalworking and MRO industries.
