The 3M utility cloth roll measures 1 inch wide by 20 yards long and features aluminum oxide abrasive with P120 grit. The roll allows users to tear desired lengths of the strip for specific applications. Most grits come on a light, J-weight cloth backing that provides flexibility to conform to circular edges, angles, or other contours, while rolls in P50 or P60 grades use a slightly stiffer X-weight backing suitable for more coarse sanding tasks. The cloth backing remains durable even when bent or rolled, resisting tearing or shelling, but strips can be hand-torn for smaller pieces without compromising the sanding surface. Aluminum oxide is chosen for its fast cut rate, long life, and self-fracturing properties that expose fresh cutting edges. This abrasive mineral is suitable for a wide variety of materials, including ferrous alloys, non-ferrous metals, wood, and plastic. Typical applications include blending, cleaning, contour finishing, deburring, and rust removal, serving industries such as marine, metalworking, and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO).
