The 3M utility cloth roll measures 1 inch wide by 20 yards long and features aluminum oxide abrasive with a P400 grit. The desired length of the strip can be torn from the roll for specific applications. Most grades have a light, J-weight cloth backing that provides flexibility to conform to circular edges, angles, or other contours, while rolls in grades P50 or P60 have a slightly stiffer X-weight backing suitable for more coarse sanding applications. The cloth remains durable even when bent or rolled, resisting tearing or shelling, but strips can be torn by hand when smaller pieces are needed without compromising the sanding surface. The aluminum oxide abrasive is known for its fast cut rate and long life, as it self-fractures to expose fresh cutting edges, unlike traditional abrasives that dull more quickly. This abrasive is suitable for a wide variety of materials in woodworking and metalworking, including ferrous alloys. It can be used on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, wood, and plastic. Typical applications include blending, cleaning, contour finishing, deburring, and rust removal in industries such as marine, metalworking, and MRO.
