The IKO shell type needle roller bearing, part# BHAM68, is a heavy-duty, closed-end bearing featuring a 3/8 inch bore, 5/8 inch outer diameter, and a width of 0.500 inches. This drawn cup design consists of an outer ring made from accurately drawn thin special steel plate and needle rollers, which may come with or without a retainer. Known for having the smallest sectional height and weight among needle roller bearings, this type offers relatively high load ratings. The retainer-equipped version is suitable for high-speed applications, whereas the grease retained type (full complement) is designed for heavy loads at low speeds. It is important to note that shell type needle roller bearings typically do not come with pre-packed lubricant, except for the grease retained models, hence proper lubrication is essential during use. These bearings are intended to be installed on shafts without inner rings, with recommended shaft surface finishes of 0.2 μm Ra or less and hardness between HRC 58 to 64. In circumstances where these specifications cannot be met, the use of IKO inner rings is advised. The accuracy of the outer ring, due to its thin cross-section, may lead to deformation upon heat treatment; therefore, direct measurement on the outer ring is not appropriate. Instead, standard mounting dimensions for shaft and housing diameters should be adhered to, with an outer ring width tolerance of +0 to -0.25 mm.
