The 3M utility cloth roll measures 2 inches wide by 50 yards long and features an aluminum oxide abrasive with a 220 grit rating. The roll allows the desired length of the strip to be torn off for specific applications. Most grades use a light, J-weight cloth backing that provides flexibility for conforming to circular edges, angles, or other contours, while grades P50 or P60 use a slightly stiffer X-weight backing for coarser sanding tasks. The cloth remains durable even when bent or rolled, resisting tearing or shelling, though strips can be torn by hand when smaller pieces are needed without compromising the sanding surface. Aluminum oxide, chosen for its fast cut-rate and long life, is a tough, durable abrasive that self-fractures to reveal fresh cutting edges, making it suitable for a wide variety of materials in woodworking and metalworking, including ferrous alloys. This abrasive can be used on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, wood, and plastic for applications such as cleaning, contour finishing, deburring, and rust removal, serving industries including marine and MRO.
