The Thhn 4 gauge building wire is a stranded type conductor available in blue, primarily used for services, feeders, and branch circuits in commercial or industrial applications as specified in the 2008 National Electrical Code. The Southwire Simpull THHN or THWN-2 conductors are suitable for use in dry locations at temperatures not to exceed 90 °C and in wet or dry locations at the same temperature for THWN-2, with a limit of 75 °C when exposed to oil. When used as type MTW, it is suitable for wet locations or when exposed to oil at temperatures not exceeding 60 °C or in dry locations at temperatures not exceeding 90 °C (ampacity limited to that for 75 °C conductor temperature per NFPA 79). The conductor can reach temperatures up to 105 °C in dry locations when rated AWM and used as appliance wiring material or when used as T90 nylon. All applications support a voltage of 600 volts and do not require pulling lubricant for installation. The specifications indicate that the Southwire Simpull THHN or THWN-2 or MTW (also AWM) meets or exceeds applicable ASTM specifications, UL Standard 83, UL 1581, UL Standard 1063 (MTW), CSA, CUL, NOM-ANCE 90 °C, Federal Specification A-A-59544, and the National Electrical Code requirements. Additionally, it is VW-1 rated for sizes 14 through 1 AWG, CT rated under UL 1685 for sizes 1/0 AWG and larger, FT1 rated for sizes through 500 KCMIL, and T90 nylon compliant for sizes through 500 KCMIL, with TWN 75 also rated for sizes through 500 KCMIL. The wire is RoHS compliant, sunlight resistant, and marked and listed in all colors for 2 AWG and larger. The construction consists of annealed (soft) copper, unilay compressed strand, insulated with a tough heat and moisture-resistant polyvinyl chloride (PVC), with a jacket made of SIM (SlikQwik infused membrane) nylon (polyamide) or an UL recognized equal.
