Ethylene propylene rubber (EPDM) is a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, specifically a terpolymer that includes a small amount of a third monomer, usually a diolefin, to enable vulcanization with sulfur. EPDM is known for its excellent resistance to ozone, sunlight, and weathering, as well as very good flexibility at low temperatures, good chemical resistance to various dilute acids and alkalies, and effective electrical insulation properties. The cure system varies, with peroxide-cured EPDMs typically offering improved heat resistance and a lower compression set compared to sulfur-cured options, which provide better flexibility but are more susceptible to hardening at high temperatures. The temperature range for standard EPDM is from -55°C (-67°F) to 125°C (257°F).
