Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR or Buna N, is a widely utilized sealing elastomer recognized for its resistance to petroleum-based fuels and lubricants, as well as its cost-effectiveness. The material is a copolymer of acrylonitrile and butadiene, with variations in the acrylonitrile content ranging from 18% to 50%. A standard nitrile formulation typically contains 34% acrylonitrile, balancing low-temperature performance with resistance to fuels and polar lubricants. The cure system for nitrile rubber can be either sulfur-cured or peroxide-cured; sulfur-cured nitriles provide better low-temperature properties but are more susceptible to hardening at elevated temperatures, while peroxide-cured nitriles offer superior heat resistance and lower compression sets, albeit at a higher processing cost. The operational temperature range for standard nitrile is from -40°C (-40°F) to 100°C (212°F).
