Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR or Buna N, is a widely utilized sealing elastomer recognized for its resistance to petroleum-based fuels and lubricants, as well as its relatively low cost. Nitrile elastomers are copolymers composed of acrylonitrile and butadiene, with variations based on acrylonitrile content, which can range from 18% to 50%. A lower ACN content enhances low-temperature properties but diminishes resistance to fuels and polar lubricants, while a higher ACN content improves resistance to these substances but compromises low-temperature performance; standard NBRs usually contain 34% ACN. The cure system typically involves sulfur, which is commonly used for standard nitriles, providing better low-temperature properties but increased hardness at elevated temperatures. Alternatively, peroxide-cured nitriles, while offering superior heat resistance and lower compression sets, are more expensive and challenging to process. The temperature range for standard nitrile is from -40°C (-40°F) for low temperatures to 100°C (212°F) for high temperatures.
