Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR or Buna N, is a widely used sealing elastomer recognized for its resistance to petroleum-based fuels and lubricants, along with its cost-effectiveness. Nitrile elastomers are copolymers of acrylonitrile and butadiene, with the acrylonitrile (ACN) content adjustable between 18% to 50%. A lower ACN content results in enhanced low-temperature performance but diminishes resistance to fuels and polar lubricants, while a higher ACN content improves resistance to fuels and polar lubricants at the expense of low-temperature properties; standard NBR typically contains 34% ACN. The cure system for nitriles is predominantly sulfur-cured, providing better low-temperature characteristics, though at the risk of hardening at elevated temperatures; alternatively, peroxide-cured nitriles offer enhanced heat resistance and reduced compression sets, albeit at a higher cost and processing complexity. The material can withstand a standard low-temperature range of -40°C (-40°F) and a standard high-temperature range of 100°C (212°F).
