Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR or Buna N, is a widely utilized sealing elastomer recognized for its resistance to petroleum-based fuels and lubricants, alongside its cost-effectiveness. Nitrile elastomers are copolymers of acrylonitrile and butadiene, with variations based on acrylonitrile content ranging from 18% to 50%. A standard NBR typically features an ACN content of 34%. The cure system plays a crucial role, as sulfur-cured standard nitriles provide superior low-temperature properties but are susceptible to hardening at elevated temperatures, whereas peroxide-cured nitriles are characterized by enhanced heat resistance and lower compression sets, albeit at a higher processing cost. The operational temperature range for standard nitrile rubber spans from a low of -40°C (-40°F) to a high of 100°C (212°F).
