Ethylene propylene rubber (EPDM) is a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, and it can also be classified as a terpolymer which includes a small amount of a third monomer, typically a diolefin, to allow for vulcanization with sulfur. EPDM is known for its excellent resistance to ozone, sunlight, and weathering, as well as for its flexibility at low temperatures and good chemical resistance to many dilute acids, alkalis, and polar solvents. It also provides good electrical insulation properties. The cure system for EPDM varies, with peroxide-cured EPDM typically offering better heat resistance and a lower compression set compared to sulfur-cured compounds, which, while offering superior flexibility, are more likely to harden and have inferior performance at high temperatures. EPDM products can operate within a standard temperature range of -55°C (-67°F) to 125°C (257°F), making them suitable for long-term use, particularly in hose systems within the construction industry.
