Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR or Buna N, is a widely used sealing elastomer recognized for its resistance to petroleum-based fuels and lubricants while maintaining a relatively low cost. Nitrile elastomers are copolymers of acrylonitrile and butadiene, with variations in acrylonitrile content ranging from 18% to 50%. A lower ACN content enhances low-temperature performance but diminishes resistance to fuels and polar lubricants, whereas a higher ACN content improves fuel and polar lubricant resistance at the expense of low-temperature properties; standard NBRs typically feature a 34% ACN content. The cure system for nitrile compounds usually involves sulfur curing, which provides better low-temperature properties but is more susceptible to hardening at high temperatures. Alternatively, peroxide-cured nitriles offer superior heat resistance and lower compression sets, though they are more costly and challenging to process. The operational temperature range for nitrile rubber extends from a standard low temperature of -40°C (-40°F) to a high temperature of 100°C (212°F).
