Product Details
Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR or Buna N, is a widely used sealing elastomer recognized for its resistance to petroleum-based fuels and lubricants, as well as its economical pricing. Nitrile elastomers are copolymers of acrylonitrile and butadiene, with variations available based on acrylonitrile content. The acrylonitrile content can range from 18% to 50%, where lower ACN concentrations provide better low-temperature properties but exhibit poorer resistance to fuels and polar lubricants, while higher ACN concentrations enhance resistance to fuels and polar lubricants at the expense of low-temperature performance. Standard NBRs typically contain 34% ACN. The cure system for standard nitriles is usually sulfur-cured, which enhances low-temperature properties but may lead to hardening at elevated temperatures. Alternatively, peroxide-cured nitriles offer improved heat resistance and lower compression sets, although they are more expensive and difficult to process. The temperature range for standard nitrile rubber is from -40°C (-40°F) for low temperatures to a maximum of 100°C (212°F) for high temperatures.
