Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR or Buna N, is a widely utilized sealing elastomer recognized for its resistance to petroleum-based fuels and lubricants, as well as its economical pricing. Nitrile elastomers are formed from copolymers of acrylonitrile and butadiene, with the acrylonitrile content (ACN) adjustable between 18% and 50%. A lower ACN content enhances low-temperature performance but reduces resistance to fuels and polar lubricants, while a higher ACN content improves resistance at the cost of low-temperature performance; standard NBRs generally have 34% ACN content. The cure system for nitrile compounds can include sulfur or peroxide; sulfur-cured nitriles provide better low-temperature properties but are susceptible to hardening at elevated temperatures, whereas peroxide-cured nitriles offer superior heat resistance and reduced compression sets, albeit at a higher cost and processing difficulty. The temperature range for standard nitrile rubber is -40°C (-40°F) for low temperatures and up to 100°C (212°F) for high temperatures.
