Product Details
Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR or Buna N, is a widely used sealing elastomer noted for its resistance to petroleum-based fuels and lubricants, alongside its relatively low price. Nitrile elastomers are copolymers of acrylonitrile and butadiene, with variations available depending on the acrylonitrile content which can range from 18% to 50%. A lower acrylonitrile content enhances low-temperature performance but diminishes resistance to fuels and polar lubricants, while a higher content improves resistance at the cost of low-temperature properties, with standard NBRs typically containing 34% acrylonitrile. The cure system for nitrile compounds can be sulfur-cured, providing better low-temperature characteristics but increased susceptibility to hardening at high temperatures, or peroxide-cured, which offers improved heat resistance and reduced compression sets, albeit at a higher cost and processing difficulty. The operational temperature range for standard nitrile rubber is from -40°C (-40°F) to 100°C (212°F).
