Nitrile rubber, also known as NBR or Buna N, is a widely utilized sealing elastomer recognized for its resistance to petroleum-based fuels and lubricants, along with its cost-effectiveness. Composed of copolymers of acrylonitrile and butadiene, nitrile elastomers can be formulated in several common variations, with the acrylonitrile content ranging from 18% to 50%. A lower ACN content enhances low-temperature performance but decreases resistance to fuels and polar lubricants, while a higher ACN content improves resistance to these substances but results in poorer low-temperature properties; standard NBRs typically have 34% ACN content. The cure systems for nitrile rubber can be either sulfur-cured or peroxide-cured, with sulfur-cured compounds offering superior low-temperature capabilities but a susceptibility to hardening at elevated temperatures, whereas peroxide-cured nitriles provide enhanced heat resistance and lower compression sets, albeit at a higher cost and processing challenge. The operational temperature range for standard nitrile rubber is -40°C to 100°C (-40°F to 212°F).
